ANSWERS TO COLOR QUESTIONS: CRAFTSMAN HOME AND OTHER COLOR QUESTIONS

QUESTION #1

CRAFTSMAN COLOR HELP

Claudine, I would love to send you a photo of our recently purchased 1916 Craftsman home. It is painted yellow, with Green trim and red accents. Many people love the colors, which are historically accurate but we find it a bit much. We need help. Would you share your ideas with us please? If so, where can we send the image?

CHRISTMAS DECOR: A WARM WELCOME

Just had to share a few pictures of the latest holiday decor - this one for a community Christmas event at a church. (see http://www.thelivingnativity.org/).   My task was to make a large empty hall feel warm and inviting and to provide areas where guests could be served hot chocolate and home baked cookies.

I was inspired by the decorations at Rogers Gardens this year (see post here).  I loved the red that was

WEDDING IN LAS VEGAS - WITH FEATHERS!

My friend Shawna says we are getting old
and she may be right -
especially if getting old means we are losing our minds

I mean, what was I thinking when I agreed to do a wedding in Las Vegas?

ITS TIME TO GET YOUR 'BOO' ON

And we all know Halloween starts at your front door....

Looking for inspiration for that very place, I discovered some Halloween facts....

Black is in . . . .
Feathers are the rage
You can have a fresh look for pennies

For example.... an inexpensive grapevine wreath (one from that pile in the garage is even better), some ribbon, scrapbook paper and glue - and a couple of bucks to use the die cut machine at your local scrapbook store - how adorable is this?

ENGLISH GARDENS... AND MORE

I try to do a garden tour each year - but this year my summer was filled with work and a long awaited vacation to Great Britain.  I love gardens.  And I especially love English country gardens.
My vacation to the UK, however, revealed a few garden surprises, right in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the world

London has many beautiful parks but the most lovely and the largest was right across the street from our hotel.  Spectacular Hyde Park.  Huge ages old trees, water, sculpture, gardens, and acres and acres

INSPIRATION: FROM EUROPE

With just one full day left in London and our schedule looking full, I suddenly realized my digital camera storage disks were completely full - and we brought extra... going through them to delete duplicates and fuzzy images and free up a little space, I found that I am completely but happily obsessed with doors, windows and other architectural details...

COLOR QUESTION FROM JENNIFER
Hello! My name is Jennifer and I have really enjoyed looking at your blog! It gave me some great decorating ideas. At this time, I am trying to get away from my decorating comfort zone of reds, golds, and greens. I am really getting into browns, blues and greys. I absolutely love all of the kitchen color combinations on your 'asked and answered-color help' page. (http://yournestdesign.blogspot.com/2011/04/asked-and-answered-color-help.html) I think I may have made a mistake in my living room though.

I just saw your blog - it's great! Thank you for sharing! I don't know how to blog, so I'll ask my question this way....What is a good kind of cream neutral yellow you would recommend for kitchen and living room - not too overwhelming, something warm and comfy?

NO MORE BORING WALLS! UNPREDICTABLE...

Ordinary is boring.
More often than not, we walk into a home and know what to expect.
The wall over the sofa will have a mirror or a painting.

The same thing over the bed, and the same thing over the mantel,

MORE ASKED AND ANSWERED: COLOR QUESTIONS

I SO ENJOY YOUR COMMENTS!  A FEW OF YOU HAD QUESTIONS REGARDING PAINT AND WALL COLORS RECENTLY SO I'M TAKING THIS OPPORTUNITY TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS......

Since we are talking paint - just a few reminders...   I have not seen your space, so you are the best judge of your lighting, size and shape of  your room and adjacent areas.

NO MORE BORING BLANK WALLS

BEAUTY, REFLECTION AND LIGHT

A blank wall can really make a room look unfinished.
But there are a lot of options to make a wall look a lot less blank and a lot more finished.

NO MORE BORING WALLS

NO MORE BORING BLANK WALLS

It stares at you every time you enter the room.  That blank stare.  Cold, unfeeling.  It says, well, what do you expect?  I'm blank and boring.  Fix me.  Make me interesting.
We all have a wall that needs something fabulous!

Speaking of fabulous, I just discovered photographer Clark Little

ASKED AND ANSWERED:
WALL COLOR - CHOOSING A YELLOW/GOLD

Question:
Thanks for putting up the info on yellow/gold.  [see http://yournestdesign.blogspot.com/2011/01/exploring-wall-color-warm-tones.html ]
However, I am as confused as ever! For example, BJ's Hawthorne Yellow looks like one color in your photo (lovely light amber) and another color in a magazine photo I have (strong primal yellow). And just when I thought maybe that was the color I was looking for.
I'm really frustrated! I've been at this for over six months. I decided on yellow or gold because I live in Chicago, and as you so aptly pointed out, moods are affected by dark days (or walls). I don't get the current trend towards grey for that reason. Heaven help us if everyone is living in a grey world.
Could you give me a bit of advice?

HOME DECOR: The Power of a Rug

A CHANGE IS GOOD

I recently took advantage of a Pottery Barn sale and changed out my old, tired 8x10 patterned rug for a tightly woven solid colored jute rug of the same size.

It was a new look for the room and gave it new life.
My husband is still getting used to it - keeps asking me if I love it - I assure him I do.

EXPLORING WALL COLOR: WARM TONES Orange, Red, Pink

I've never been a fan of Orange.

But doing a little research for this blog, my eyes were opened.  There is a lot about Orange to love.  I found that there were a lot more variations on Orange than I had thought of when starting this post - colors like Coral, Terra Cotta, Peach and Persimmon.  They sound so much more interesting than just 'Orange', don't they?.

I found I liked orange with cream
it even sounds delicious
