QUESTION FROM A READER:

Hi Claudine
Your blog has been hugely helpful to me as I redecorate my LR. We just had the walls painted Desert Tan/Benjamin Moore (photo attached) --

yes, we have one paneled wall with fireplace. Since we get good light in that room, the color looks like a pale buttery yellow. I need new furniture and an 8x10 rug. I'm trying to keep things clean and simple (in contrast to the chaos of color we currently have), with decor in warm oranges, reds and even green. What do you think? I'm also looking at ivory jute rugs, but I wonder if that will be too boring. It's kind of a small (rectangle) LR, so I'm trying to make the place look bigger. Do you think the loveseat should go neutral, too?

Thanks so much for any assistance you can provide.

Kind regards,
Christine

Dear Christine,
Your wall color, Desert Tan by Benjamin Moore, is neutral enough to go well with many colors - as well as other neutrals.   It looks especially nice with fresh white trim.
Your rug can be multicolored with neutral sofas,
or a neutral tone

I do recommend neutrals on sofas and other more expensive furnishings that need to last a few years in your home, because they can transition into another color scheme easily.
an ivory rug looks very nice too, as does ivory in general
both in floor coverings and in furnishings or fabrics

it just depends how neutral
or how monochromatic you want to go

Desert tan lends itself to contemporary or traditional/transitional decor
it can look soft and calm with light colors
or fresh and modern with higher contrasting woods and accents

hopefully, these photos have inspired you
or helped you decide which direction you want to go!
GOOD LUCK!
