BEST GRAY FOR A SMALL DARK ROOM

 GIVE ME A GRAY.....

Gray.  It's a popular color in design, and not going away anytime soon.  In rooms filled with light, high ceilings, lots of white wood trim - it's beautiful and fresh.  But what about a small room, with low ceilings?  Can gray work here?

READER QUESTION:
Love your website - you are incredibly generous to share all this information! What would be the best gray color for a small bedroom that has one small north facing window. The room is pretty dark and
I am having no luck at all picking a room color. Since it's such a small room I don't want it to feel cave like. Thanks so much for any advice!

Hi, and thank you for reading the blog!  I love to receive questions and comments. In a dark room, double up on the lighting.  More lamps, good overhead light, some mood or accent lighting and task lighting.  If you have adequate lighting, your room will be even more beautiful with lovely wall color.  Two singularly beautiful grays with plenty of light are Benjamin Moore STONINGTON GRAY and BENNINGTON GRAY

A warmer gray, but still on the light side, GRAY CASHMERE, Benjamin Moore.

If you can add a good dose of white in the room, Martha Stewart FLAGSTONE is one of my favorite paint colors.

You can use a deeper gray if you use it with white.  Here specific accent areas add color to a room, while the remaining white walls keep it light and fresh.

Best wishes!

  1. Thank you so much for answering my question. I'm going to try the BM Stonington Gray this weekend - it's a very pretty gray/blue! The direction a room faces makes such a difference - I tried BM Owl Gray in the bedroom but it looked very dingy (even though Owl Gray looks perfect in my dining room). Thanks again for your advice.
