- COLOR OF THE YEAR - 2012:
- It's that time again. In fact I'm a little tardy in posting this information. As usual, we have Pantone's prediction for color of the year - the fashion and home decor industry will be pumping out clothing and home goods in the vibrant shade of Tangerine Tango for 2012.

Expect to see the orange hue popping up everywhere this year. Orange is a strong confident color that grabs attention - and not everyone's cup of tea in large doses. How do you feel about adding orange to your home decor?

Benjamin Moore's prediction for 2012 is a particularly lovely shade of blue/green. Wythe Blue will usher in a new trend for home decorating - look for blues popping up everywhere because it's back big time.

By a lovely coincidence, Orange and Blue are complementary colors. On the color wheel they are opposite each other, which means they bring out the best in each other. So a blue color scheme with pops of orange, or orange scheme with accents of blue, will bring out the best - or complete - each color.

Some rooms just need less energy - your bedroom, for example. Your bedroom needs to be soothing, calming and serene. That may mean different things to different people. Deep saturated color may not make me want to curl up and sleep, but its a well known fact that hot pink is used to calm patients in some mental institutions.
One of my readers, who prefers to remain anonymous, asked a question about her bedroom color -
"I have a small bedroom - - Furniture is Oak with brushed nickle looking accent pieces - and a eggplant comforter, and lighter dusty lavender sheets, and eggplant curtains... I need suggestions for wall colors other than the white we have now.... Thoughts are light grey or a light color barley there purple(lavender) Please give some suggestions .. "
Dear Anonymous:
The room you have described is a play on a monochromatic scheme - the eggplant and dusty lavender all derive from the same purple/violet base. It can be a very soothing palette and perfect for a bedroom.
To continue the calm feel, a light to medium toned gray or gray with a purple undertone is the perfect choice for the cool tones you have in the room.
You are definitely headed in the right direction! Here are some choices from Benjamin Moore paints.

Lake Placid (BM)

Smokey Taupe (BM)

Senora Gray (BM)
Good luck with your choices!

Just a note to thank you for your wonderful posts. I enjoy your blog immensely, but it must keep you very busy.
Okay, I love ORANGE anyway... but that BLUE and orange room (with the blue toile wallpaper and baby blue headboard? THAT is my dream bedroom. Love love love.
Dear Poof,
Thank you! I love sharing with you!
Victoria,
That is a particularly delicious combination, I agree!
I have a tricky design question. I am painting my living area to include the entry, the halls, and for the most part all of the common used and seen areas sw grassland. I have dark brown leather sofa and distressed black cabinet which is quite large and center of room. I also have a rattan/wicker truck as a coffee table. I have a antique rocker that my husband had recovered in black/cream houndstooth, which has to stay in the room. How can I incorporate my idea of natrual-calming, cottage decor into my room with the houndstooth chair and my desire for soften grey-green walls? Also I would like to have the greyish-blue color as an accent color. Is this possible? green/blue/brown with black
